App Attack: Adapter – Free Video Converter for Mac and Windows

We’ve taken a look at a lot of video converters in the past. My all time favourite is still Evom, a simple to use video converter for Mac. Now though, there’s a decent alternative and it works on Windows too. It’s still in beta but as far I can tell, it’s read for action.

Let’s take a look at Adapter.

Adapter is developed by Macroplant, the same guys who brought you Phone Disk and loads of other cool software.

Adapter is able to convert to and from almost any type video formats you can get your hands on, including and not limited to AVI, DV, FLV, MOB, MP4, 3GP, MPEG, and RM. It’s actually 4 apps in one: a video converter, audio converter, image converter and flash video downloader.

Video

Adapter is able to work with almost any format you throw at it and its built on FFmpeg. Like many other video converters available, it has a database of predefined settings for Apple devices, popular mobile devices and gaming consoles.

Adding videos to the queue is as simple as a drag-and-drop. Click the advanced button to reveal additional settings. I did find that Adapter never fully utilised both of my MacBook’s core processors.

Audio

A simple audio converter is built into Adapter, providing you with the option to convert between MP3, M4A, AC3, AAC, WAV, ORG and MKA. It can also strip the audio track from any input video file, which is pretty cool.

Thoughts

Personally, I feel that the addition of a image converter is a little over the top. Most users will have a dedicated image editor for this task. But here it is anyway. There isn’t much to mention about this aspect of Adapter except that it’s able to convert JPG, PNG, BMP, TGA, TIF, THM, GIF, ICO, XMB, etc.

The flash video download is nice but again, pretty unnecessary.

Overall, since Adapter is still in beta, it’s actually pretty decent and is a great option for those looking for an easy-to-use video converter.
