App Attack: Cartoonatic for iOS [Review]

cartoonatic

From the makers of FX Photo Studio HD, PerfectPhoto and PhotoPal, comes a new video effects app for all of you future videographers out there — Cartoonatic. This app lets you record video with your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad 2 with 9 different cartoon video effects. Cartoonatic displays the effect live and you’re able to switch between effects by simply tapping on the screen.

Full review, screenshots and download link after the jump.

Cartoonatic is a very simple app to use. As I mentioned earlier, there are 9 whacky cartoon video effects in the library ranging from pencil sketches to robotronic pixels. By upgrading to the premium app for $0.99, you get an additional 3 effects. The user interface is simple to navigate: on the bottom from left to right, you have an icon to upgrade to the premium app, a record button and a menu button. At the top is the standard iAd advertisement (which can be pretty obtrusive at times and messes with your framing of the shot).

The video effects are rendered live and makes it much easier to select the appropriate effect for the shot. Switching between effects only requires tapping on the screen and the next effect, along with its name will be displayed with almost zero loading time.

Here’s an example of another effect — a sort of pencil sketch. There are quite a few of these. Videos can be recorded in 320X400 (default setting) or 360X480.

Interestingly, Cartoonatic offers the option to select an audio track for the output video. You’re able to choose any track from your iPod library or pick one of the pre-loaded tracks. If you decide to disable audio from your video altogether, there’s an option to mute the recording from the menu.

All recorded videos are stored in the app’s video gallery until they’re shared via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, email, or manually exported to your Camera Roll.

Cartoonatic is free and is available from the iTunes App Store.
