Make Your Own Free Android Ringtones On The Fly With Ringdroid

Creating your own free Android ringtones from a favourite song usually involves opening it in an audio editor, clipping the parts that you want and removing the parts that you don’t. Not only does it require special software tailor-made for the purpose of audio editing, you also need to spend a considerable amount of time to get your favourite tune on. If you own an Android, however, you can go ahead and do the entire thing easily and within a few minutes.

To create your free Android ringtones, you are going to need an app from the Android Market (link below) called Ringdroid. This app comes at the awesome price of free, and will turn your phone into a basic audio editing device. It provides sufficient functionality to enable you to create free android ringtones whilst being simple enough to be understood by even a novice. Here’s how to go about making your own free Android ringtones on the fly:

  1. Obviously, go here, and install the app. Then launch it (wow!).
  2. Next, you will be presented with a list of every audio track that you have on your phone along with a search box at the top, in case you don’t want to scroll through the entire list. So scroll down to (or search for) the track you want as your ringtone and click on it to load it in the editor.

  3. Within a few seconds, you will be greeted with a waveform displayed on your screen, which is basically the audio track shown as a graph. You will also be given two placeholders on the screen, which would aid you with the actual selection of the section you want as your ringtone.

  4. The top handle will help you to move your selection around, while the bottom handle will enable you to expand or shrink the window that would decide how long your ringtone is. So for example, if you wanted your ringtone to begin at the 20th second of a song, you would just load the track, and use the top handle to move quickly to the 20th second, and the bottom one to decide where exactly it would end.
  5. If you are one of those people who knows exactly which part of the song to include in your free Android ringtones, you can actually go ahead and enter the values manually. Do that by tapping the boxes below the waveform and input the times with your keyboard (if the keyboard doesn’t come up, keep the Menu button on your Android pressed for a bit). The play button allows you to listen to your selection, while the Zoom In and Zoom Out buttons allow you to have more fine-grained control over your selection.
  6. Once satisfied with the start and end points of your tone, click the Save button to go ahead and save the tone — it looks like the universally recognised disk icon. You will be asked whether the selection you’ve made is a ringtone or notification, and then asked to name the file. Once you enter a name and save the tone, the app will also give you the option to set the tone as your default ringtone, or as a ringtone for a specific contact. You could also ignore all that and just close the app.

So go ahead and give the app a spin and marvel at the ease at which you can produce your own free Android ringtones. Oh, and the next time someone asks you whether you have that tone, just go ahead and make the ringtone on your Android. How cool is that?

  1. What about a site like http://www.brinked.com as opposed to buying an app
