For every computer user, system protection is of critical importance. Malware, adware, viruses, trojans, malicious attacks by external users, spam emails and various others of the like are the menaces that plague our online lives every day, and every user needs a ‘knight in shining armor’ that can offer a robust protection package. We’ve recently published a list of the 5 great free security downloads to protect your Windows PC and also, the best, top rated antivirus software for Windows to help you get acquainted with the free protection software available today.
However, if you’re one of those people who doesn’t like to scrimp when it comes to protection, Agnitum’s Outpost Security Suite Pro 7.5 might be a good choice.
This week, we’ll be giving away 10 free copies of Outpost Security Suite Pro 7.5 worth $300 in total! But first, a brief introduction.
Outpost Security Suite Pro offers an all-in-one security experience, combining the power of:
- An advanced firewall for external protection
- Combination of a robust antivirus and antispyware
- Built-in host protection
- Web Control
- Anti spam engine for reducing junk
There are two modes of operation, with a Simple mode for regular users and an Expert mode catering to those who look for a more thorough control over the PC’s operating environment. Outpost Security Suite Pro features an auto-learning mode where it trains itself on your preferences based on your security choices and permissions that you grant. It will even prompt about whatever it has learnt with respect to any application, so you are always aware of what’s going on.
The firewall is robust, and even if you haven’t used any firewall prior to this, Outpost will not prove to be overtly obtrusive – it learns to manages itself for most common applications, and will not bug you for those that it learns about later through your usage patterns.
The alerts that are generated by Outpost Security Suite Pro are also rather concise and deliver clear information with a reasonable number of possible actions. However, the can become nosy when the program starts generating behavioural alerts.
The malware scanner is thorough and looks for both spyware and viruses/trojans. It also scans and deletes known rootkits, but there is no dedicated anti-rootkit module or tool in the product, so you’ll need a dedicated program for that (like Sophos Anti-Rootkit listed on this page). On the other hand, the only problem that I had with the scanner was its rather slow speed. While this parameter is subject to the number of files in your system, I’ve seen better speeds on the same machine that I ran this one on.
One nice feature about the malware scanner is its USB virus protection. Since removable flash drives are one of the most frequent sources of malware infection, the program blocks any auto-run commands when a USB is inserted, and is keen on scanning the full drive before providing access.
On the heuristics side, Outpost Security Suite Pro comes with a Proactive Protection module which looks for malicious behavior to block previously-undiscovered/unknown threats. The preemptive measures employed by this module ensure that your system will not succumb to new malware and zero-day threats.
The program is also resource friendly, with a memory footprint of ~13 MB only in idle mode.
On the critical side, we really cannot dig up much comparison on Outpost Security Suite Pro with other security products, mainly because most independent testing labs do not include Outpost Security Suite Pro in their tests. Virus Bulletin is the only lab that regularly includes Outpost Security Suite Pro, and the gave it their VB100 award for nine out of ten (9/10) tests – an impressive score since Norton received the same. However, these are for detection rates only; the program could use a performance improvement when it comes to actually removing malware. The scores are acceptable, but still far from the top contenders in this group. In the end, it comes to budget/performance balance, and Outpost Security Suite Pro plays nicely on that front.
Quoting PC Mag’s verdict on Outpost, “In this industry, if you’re not actively advancing your technology you’re going backward. The latest Outpost suite offers better performance and better malware blocking than its predecessor, but that’s all the progress we could see.” We tend to agree.
We have 10 copies of Outpost Security Suite Pro for TheDailyBuggle readers to get their hands on and try. It’s pretty simple to win a copy.
