Hold On To Your Copy of VLC Media Player!

If you have previously downloaded a copy of VLC Media Player for your iDevice, hold on to it. Apple recently removed the much-loved VLC player from the App Store after receiving a formal notification from the developers of the desktop client.

The mobile app and Apple’s iTunes Terms and Conditions were both in violation of the original GNU license which VLC is based on because App Store purchases (even if downloaded for free) have Digital Rights Management (DRM) applied to them.

VLC developer Rémi Denis-Courmont said, “On January 7th, Apple removed VLC media player from its application store for iDevices. Thus the incompatibility between the GNU General Public License and the AppStore terms of use is resolved – the hard way. This end should not have come to a surprise to anyone, given the precedents.”

Yeah, thanks a lot.
