Say you got your first iOS devices and want to start downloading apps from the iTunes App Store? You’ll be surprised to know that in order to create an iTunes Account, you’ll need a valid credit card. While credit cards are pretty common nowadays, not everyone has one. So how would you go about making an iTunes account without a credit card? It’s still possible.

This article will explain how to create a new Apple iTunes account without providing a credit card.

In order to make an iTunes account without a credit card, we’ll need to bypass the regular signup process. First, you’ll need to launch iTunes and navigate to the iTunes Store from the left side bar. If you currently do not have an iTunes account, you won’t be signed in. But check to be sure — look for the ‘Sign In’ option in the screenshot below and you’re good to go.

Next, scroll to the bottom of the Store view until you can see the flag icon, showing the country’s store that you’re currently accessing.

Click the flag to reach the store/country selection screen, and select your correct country. Or, if you’d like to get the occasional app for free, select the United States store.

Once you’re done with the country selection, go back and select a free app from the AppStore. For this tutorial, I’ve selected the Google Search application.

Attempt to download the app by clicking the Free App button and a dialog box will appear, prompting you to either sign in or create a new account. Select the Create New Account option.

Note: This trick lies in this step, so make sure you’ve selected a free app and follow the instructions accurately. Otherwise, the option to skip providing your credit card information will remain unavailable.

Now, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID information. The email address entered here will be your new Apple ID and is used to access your iTunes account, so make sure it’s a valid one. Apple sends a verification email to the address specified. Fill in the rest of the required information and hit Continue to reach the payment method screen.

If you followed the instructions correctly, a None radio box will be available next to the credit card providers. Select that and fill in your address. It’s important to provide a US address if you selected to open an iTunes account in the US iTunes Store. Move on when done.

Your new iTunes account will be created and a verification email will be sent to your specified email address. You can also choose to resend the verification email if it wasn’t received, but be sure to check your junk mail folder, just in case.

Once you’ve verified your email address, you have successfully created an iTunes account without a credit card. There remains, however, one more step before you can actually use it with iTunes Store, and that is authorizing your computer.

To do so, expand the Store menu from the top bar, and select Authorize This Computer.
