In the past, hopping on protected WiFi networks using Android phones has been tricky. Say you’re at a friend’s place and you want to jump on their network, but they’re smart and they’ve got their network protected, WPA-style. They have to give you the name of the network, the settings, the password, etc. and then you’ve got to enter all of that information with your fat fingers on your tiny keypad. You may like to do it that way, you masochist, but most of the rest of us would like to find an easier way.
Since the advent of QR codes and one free nifty Android app, we can now share our network settings with relative ease. Using the Wifi Joiner app, we would like to show you how you can easily create an Android QR code for your WiFi settings and how to easily connect to your friend’s network easily using the QR code created with the app. Yes, you can both create QR codes and decode them easily with your Android.
Create a QR code containing your network settings
Why would you want to create an Android QR code of your network settings? We already mentioned that it makes sharing with friends so much easier. On top of that, you can also avoid giving the sensitive information out (using encryption) while still allowing people to connect.
Step one: Install the app by following this Android market link.
Step two: When you open the app, the first thing you’ll see is the scanner attempting to scan a code. Just hit your menu button and a create option will pop up from the bottom.
Step three: Create the code. Choose to either use a pre-existing network on your phone or create one from scratch.
Step four: Share the code. You have several options here. If your friend is standing right there next to you, they can open the app and scan it right from your screen. On top of that, if you tap the menu button again you’ll be given several more ways to save the QR code as an image.
Connect to a network via a QR code
Using the Wifi Joiner app, it is very easy to connect to another network once they’ve created a QR code using the app.
Step one: Open the app. When you open the app, the QR scanner is the first thing to start.
Step two: Point the scanner at the code. It doesn’t matter if the code was printed, is still on your friend’s phone, or it was emailed to you and it’s on a computer screen. Just point and hold it there.
Step three: Tap “Connect to network.”
Yes, for real, that is all there is. Open, point, and tap.
So that’s how you connect to WiFi networks using QR codes. If you’ve got any other bright ideas on how to accomplish the same task, let us know in the comments. Otherwise, please share this post with other Android users.
