If you’re looking for an easy way to transfer iTunes to a new computer or to transfer music in iTunes from computer to computer while retaining all of your ratings and playlists, this article will teach you how. If you’re running Windows, all you need is CopyTrans TuneSwift.
Don’t worry, I’ll show you how it all works.
Installing CopyTrans TuneSwift
As mentioned earlier, transferring iTunes to a new computer or between computers is a 3-step process thanks to CopyTrans TuneSwift. First, we have to install it on the computer that has the iTunes library you wish to backup/transfer. It’s not as easy as you might think because the latest version of CopyTrans TuneSwift costs $4.99. Here, we’ll be installing the previous version, which is free.
Download CopyTrans TuneSwift from here.

When prompted, create a new AllMyApps account or sign in with Facebook, Twitter or Google. AllMyApps is our preferred method of installation on any Windows PC.

If you’ve used AllMyApps before and already have the installer, click the blue button. Otherwise, click the green button to download the installer as well.
Usual protocol, install the AllMyApps installer.

When AllMyApps is installed, you’ll be asked to sign in to your account. Once you’ve done so, the app will start to install CopyTrans TuneSwift. Just check the box next to CopyTrans TuneSwift and click Install.

CopyTrans TuneSwift will begin downloading.

When this window pops up, check the license agreement and click Install.

Double-click on CopyTrans TuneSwift in the AllMyApps manager to launch it.

The CopyTrans Control Center will pop up. Right-click on CopyTrans TuneSwift and select Old version — CopyTrans TuneSwift 1.49 (which is the free version). After it downgrades, the app will start up.

Using CopyTrans TuneSwift to transfer iTunes to a new computer
In the CopyTrans TuneSwift main interface, select Transfer.

In the next step, select PC (Windows) if your new computer is a Windows PC. Or if you have rewarded yourself with a new Mac, select that instead.

Next, when asked where you’d like to transfer your iTunes library to, select New Computer.

You will be asked to connect an external USB hard drive in order to save the backup file to be transferred over to the new computer. After plugging in the external hard drive, select a location to save the *.tsw backup file.

Once you click on the Transfer button shown in the screenshot above, this pop up will appear. Copy and paste TUNESWIFT-FINAL-FREE into the activation code field and click Activate.

CopyTrans TuneSwift will start backing up your current iTunes library.
Restoring the iTunes library on a new computer
The restoration process is about the same as what we’ve just gone through. Download and install CopyTrans TuneSwift from AllMyApps by pressing the green button when prompted. Make sure that you remember to downgrade CopyTrans TuneSwift to version 1.49 in the CopyTrans Control Manager.
When CopyTrans TuneSwift launches, select Restore.

You’ll be asked to locate the backup *.tsw file and select the iTunes library destination folder. If you didn’t change anything during the iTunes installation process, the default destination is correct. Now all that’s left to do is to click Start Restore.

That’s about it. When the restoration process is over, your iTunes library would have successfully been transferred over, along with your playlists, ratings and other meta data.

Will this transfer my iPhone information as well?

Hayley, it does. But remember that you will only be able to sync your iPhone with one computer. When switching computers, iTunes will wipe the data in your iPhone and restore it again.

How about a tool to transfer from MAC to PC? I have been struggling with that one for a while now…

I backed up my iTunes OK on my PC, but only a Windows version appears available when I go to download the app to my Mac. When I downloaded the Windows version on my Parallel Desktop, it won’t recognize my Mac iTunes. Now what do I do?

Adri,
I suggest that you try backing it up again. If it fails, head over to the support forum http://www.copytrans.net/support.php?action=GoToCategory&data=240
